Project Zero: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is a remaster of the Japanese-only Wii game from 2008. Originally, developed by Tecmo, Nintendo SPD, and Grasshopper Manufacture. This new version is by Koei Tecmo.
Fatal Frame/Zero/Project Zero is a long-running survival horror game series. Project Zero: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was the first game released on a Nintendo console. The only one I have ever played and still own is Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly on PlayStation 2.
This game is set in the 1980s on the fictional Island of Rougetsu and centres on Ruka Minazuki. One of a group of girls who were held captive on the island. Years after their rescue, still suffering from amnesia, Ruka and the two surviving girls return to the island.
The gameplay, as with previous games in the series, revolves around exploring environments and defeating hostile ghosts using an item called the Camera Obscura. You control four different characters and navigate a variety of Japanese-inspired environments.
If you like Japanese horror, I would recommend the game. However, it offers different costumes for the characters, which are mostly bought. Many of which are not appropriate for the setting.
I like horror games where you can change clothes, but why are they always weird and perverted? Most of these costumes are available with an expensive DLC pack that costs half the amount of the game.
The game is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series S and X.
