Rumor: Bethesda Now Owns S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Franchise Rights

Hopefully the future games will again be similar in tone to the 1979 film.

A Ukraine report has announced that apparently Bethesda Softworks the publisher of great games such as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 3 have gained the publishing rights to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise. The new S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 game was canceled earlier this year when the developer GSC Game World when out of business.

If the report is true then Bethesda Softworks will be able to publish games based on the S.T.A.L.K.E.R franchise with its own video game technology but it doesn’t have the rights to the extended S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe. How and what game they would make is anyone guess but a game like Fallout and S.T.A.L.K.E.R are completely different in tone and atmosphere so hopefully they keep games like these separate and don’t just go the easy route with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R franchise.

Bethesda Games Studios have currently not made any response to these claims so who knows if it’s actually true?
