World of Warcraft Has Lost Over a Million Subscribers Since May 2012

One forlorn looking Pandaren and what the servers will look like one day.

No one can say that World of Warcraft isn’t the master of subscription based MMORPGs but the games number to fluctuate and this is one of those times again. The most recent subscriptions numbers for World of Warcraft were released yesterday in the Activision Blizzard earnings report for the second quarter of 2012.

The game has now dropped to a total of 9.1 million subscribers by the end of June. That means World of Warcraft has loss a total of 1.1 million players since the last time the subscriber numbers were announced in May.

However despite the loss of subscriber the overall earning report is positive with the announced launch date of World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria and the quite unbelievable success of Diablo III (it has currently sold over ten million copies). The report goes on to say that most of the lost subscriptions are from Eastern players rather than North America and European players.  World of Warcraft hasn’t been beneath the ten million subscribers number in a few years now but it’s still a healthy number they got and with World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria coming out soon that number will likely shoot back up to around ten million subscribers as people like me return to the game level up and see whats been added in the new expansion. Dont expect World of Warcraft to go free-to-play anytime soon.
