Video Games to Watch Out For in 2012 Part #1

How times change.

As it’s a start of a new year, new video games are coming out to look forward to. Over the next few days or so I will be listing nearly thirty games that you should watch out for this year.

Each part will have around six games that you should look out for. In no particular order.

This part includes the following games:

Ninja Gaiden 3, Dragon Quest X, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Soul Calibur V, Crusader Kings II, Mass Effect 3 and Street Fighter X Tekken.

Ninja Gaiden 3

Over the top violence.

Ninja Gaiden 3 is an upcoming action-adventure video game developed by Team Ninja and published by Tecmo Koei. It is the sequel to Ninja Gaiden II and will be released in March 2012. It will be the first title in the series not to be directed by franchise mainstay, Tomonobu Itagaki. In his place will be the designer of the Sigma series, Yosuke Hayashi.

The game will explore Ryu’s more human side as he descends into a hellish realm. It will deal with the sword of the Archfiend from Ninja Gaiden II.

It is due for release on 20th March 2012 in North America and 23rd March 2012 in Europe.

Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Online

One happy jester.

Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Online is an upcoming MMORPG developed and published by Square Enix for the Wii and Wii U video game consoles. It is the tenth installment in the acclaimed Dragon Quest series.

Formally announced by Yuji Horii on December 10, 2008 at a Dragon Quest conference, it has been called “the highest profile third-party release ever announced for the platform” by Nintendo Power.

It is due for release in 2012 in Japan.

Final Fantasy XIII-2

They look related.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 developed and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It is being produced by Square Enix’s 1st Production Department, with help from external developer tri-Ace. It is a direct sequel to the 2009 role playing game, Final Fantasy XIII.

The game takes place three years after the events of Final Fantasy XIII, Lightning, the protagonist of the original game, has disappeared into an unknown world. Her younger sister Serah Farron, a returning character, and a boy named Noel Kreiss attempt to find Lightning.

Square Enix Europe has stated that the game “exceeds Final Fantasy XIII in every aspect” and that it has an evolved battle system of the original game.

The game was released in Japan on December 15, 2011. It is due for release on 31st January 2012 in North America, 2nd February 2012 in Australia and 3rd February 2012 in Europe.

Soulcalibur V

Thats more like it.

Soulcalibur V is the upcoming sixth installment in Namco’s Soul series of fighting games, and will be released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012.The game will take place 17 years after the events of Soulcalibur IV.

The main protagonist is Patroklos, the son of Soul series veteran Sophitia, while her daughter, Pyrrha is the deuteragonist. The only revealed guest character so far is Ezio Auditore da Firenze from the Assassin’s Creed series.

It is due for release on 31st January 2012 in North America, 2nd February 2012 in Japan and 3rd February 2012 in Europe.

Crusader Kings II

Start your own holy wars.

Crusader Kings II is an upcoming grand strategy game to be developed and published by Paradox Interactive. It is currently scheduled to be released for Microsoft Windows in 2012.

Crusader Kings II explores one of the defining periods in world history in an experience crafted by the masters of Grand Strategy. Medieval Europe is brought to life in this epic title rife with rich strategic and tactical depth.

It is due for release on 7th February 2012.

Mass Effect 3

Pew pew pew.

Mass Effect 3 is an upcoming action role-playing game developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.Officially announced on December 11, 2010, the game is scheduled for a March 6, 2012 release and will mark the final chapter in the Mass Effect trilogy of video games, completing the story of Commander Shepard.

Gameplay in Mass Effect 3 will be influenced by decisions from Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 and have settings throughout the galaxy, including Earth and Mars. Combat has been changed and refined; in particular, the cover system has been improved, there will be more options for moving around the battlefield, instant melee kills and more conventional grenades will be introduced as well as improved artificial intelligence. A four player multiplayer co-op mode will also be available.

Mass Effect 3 will follow from the events of the Mass Effect 2 DLC expansion Arrival and follows Commander Shepard’s mission to save the galaxy from the Reapers by rallying civilizations of the galaxy together, while also having to deal with Cerberus, who have decided to turn against him/her.

It is due for release on 6th March 2012 in North America and 9th March 2012 in Europe.

Street Fighter X Tekken

Kick some Tekken ass.

Street Fighter X Tekken is an upcoming crossover fighting game being developed by Capcom. The game was announced at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con International by Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono. The game is set to release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows and PlayStation Vita sometime in March 2012. The game will feature characters from both the Street Fighter franchise and Namco’s Tekken series.

As the game is being made by Capcom, with Namco being involved more in the licensing of the Tekken cast, the gameplay will be based on the 2D gameplay of Street Fighter as opposed to the Tekken series, and will feature projectile moves such as the Hadouken. Namco is currently producing their own take on the crossover, Tekken X Street Fighter, which will follow their own style of gameplay.

It is due for release on 6th March 2012 in North America and 9th March 2012 in Europe.
