GOTM: March 2023 – Drop – System Breach

Most of the game takes place on screens like this and is fun.

Game of the Month (GOTM) is my monthly post where I highlight my favourite video game of the month. These posts will determine my Game of the Year (GOTY) at the end of the year. The same rules apply to GOTM as it does when writing my GOTY.

GOTM 2023: March – Drop – System Breach (PC)

My GOTM for March 2023 is Drop – System Breach. It is an action and strategy hacking game from Etherfield Studio.

Drop – System Breach is set in a dystopian future where the world is disconnected into virtual tribes. You play as a hacker in Windport, working for different factions such as police, megacorporations and others.

The game is a story and mission-focused with procedurally generated side missions. Each mission is set in a computer network where various tasks must be completed to succeed. These range from downloading data and removing viruses to disabling security systems.

The credits you earn from missions are sued to upgrade your hacking deck. You can make your deck faster with firewalls and faster CPU threads. Programs that can be bought make the game easier, such as remotely hacking gates and deleting server logs.

The game is colourful in a dystopian 1980s way. The use of classic computers, fonts and the user interface are used throughout. This all makes you feel immersed in the alternative world of a hacker.

I was slightly disappointed to find that Drop – System Breach is not like Uplink, which had a more graphical different type of user interface and more variety.

Drop – System Breach deletes your save file when you complete the story and is a problem. You can’t carry on your game at the end. They should have added an endless mode or a roguelike mode.

I have done a review of Drop – System Breach, which you can read here: Drop – System Breach Review.

This is the most fun I had with a game in March and why it is my Game of the Month.

See you next time for my new 2023 Game of the Month.
