Last week Nintendo’s Nintendo Direct broadcast revealed some quite interesting new games and new characters for games currently in development. They also released a lot of videos and are offering a little giveaway to Nintendo Network ID users.

Nintendo revealed that Rosalina from the Super Mario Galaxy franchise will be playable in both Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8. Nintendo also announced a new Wii U game scheduled for 2014 and developed by Tecmo-Koei that will be familiar to fans of the Dynasty Warriors franchise. Currently the game is named Hyrule Warriors and will be set in the world of The Legend of Zelda. Hyrule Warriors is a separate project from a new Zelda game currently in development for Wii U by franchise producer Eiji Aonuma.

Nintendo announced launch dates for new games, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (early 2014) on Wii U and Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (early 2014) on Nintendo 3DS. Golf for Wii Sports Club and a new game that remixes NES themed challenges called named NES Remix were also announced and are both now available from Nintendo eShop. Nintendo NES Remix looks like a good idea but from what I heard and seen its had mostly negative feedback.

Other new information about Yoshi’s New Island and Kirby’s upcoming new adventure were also shown on Nintendo 3DS.

Miiverse and Nintendo Network ID now on Nintendo 3DS

Quite recently Nintendo release a new system update for the Nintendo 3DS that among minor things allows support for Nintendo Network ID and Miiverse.

Miiverse is a network service that is similar to a forum but mostly focuses on hand drawn art and screenshots, it was previously only available to Wii U users but it is now available on both (requires a Nintendo Network ID). Miiverse can also be accessed on Wii U or via PC or smartphones here.

A Nintendo Network ID will now be required to download content from Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS. A Nintendo Network ID can be created directly on your Nintendo 3DS or if you have already created an ID on the Wii U, you can link the same ID and account balances on the Nintendo 3DS.

Free Super Mario Bros. Deluxe

Finally Nintendo are offering the Game Boy Color Colour version of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe to people who perform the latest Nintendo 3DS system update between 10th December 2013 and 31st January 2014 and register or link a Wii U Nintendo Network ID on your Nintendo 3DS (Doesn’t have to be recent). Download codes will then be emailed between 13th February and 28th February 2014.

My Thoughts

Nintendo has a quite good 2013 especially for the Nintendo 3DS but the Wii U still lags behind other consoles in terms of games and reasons to own it and with 2014 games schedule it isn’t looking too bright for either platform. However Nintendo normally has a few things up their sleeve so I expect 2014 to at least be near to 2013 in terms of games and progress.
