Four Games to Play this Halloween

Trick-or-treat, smell my feet, give me something good to play.

As I’m sure everyone’s is aware its Halloween today. The time of the year when you are encouraged to take sweets from strangers. If you are too old to go trick-or-treating or you haven’t got no friends to have a Halloween party with, stay in, get comfy, turn of the lights, pretend you’re not in to door knockers and play these recently released games. These game will yet you enjoy the spirit of the day while having a good time without getting cold and wet.

To see my games of Halloween 2010 go here.

Costume Quest (PC/Xbox 360/PS3)

Trick or treat!... Holy shit! not again.

This game was only available on consoles last year but is now available on PC.

Like a Christmas game this game will probably only be played on Halloween. Developed by Double Fine, Costume Quest sends the player and he’s friends on a Halloween collectathon. You will collect items for costumes, candy/sweets and try to find your lost kidnapped sister. It contains role-playing and adventure elements. You can add stamps to augment special abilities and level up by gaining experience points. By knocking on people doors and trick or treating you can get more candy or fight a monster for XP. These are the games random encounters. When you fight a monster you turn into your realistic life-like counter part for example the robot costume turns you into a real laser shooting robot in battles. New costumes can be found by finding costume parts and each has its own strengths and weaknesses. There are also many mini games to play like apple bobbing.

Costume Quest is a great game to play on Halloween and is highly recommended for its cute take on a scary day. It is the closest you can get to real life trick-or-treating in a video game.

The Haunted: Hells Reach (PC)

Uppercut mutants.

This PC only game will quite familiar to anyone who has played a game like Killing Floor, however the main goal is to liberate cursed places and survive the endless assault from the minions of Hell. It has a similar artistic style to Killing Floor but it is played from a third person view and you can only play with up to four players. If you die in a round your soul stone drops somewhere on the map which can be used to resurrect you if a player shots it. This stone can also be picked up by enemies which they will carry around with them. This means you will have to kill them first.

If you are a fan of co-op survival games The Haunted Hells Reach is worth checking out and is very suitable for this time of year.

Dungeon Defenders (PC/Xbox 360/PS3)

Damn mages.

Dungeon Defenders is a an excellent tower defense RPG where you must save the land of Etheria from an Ancient Evil. You can create a hero from one of four different classes, Squire, Apprentice, Huntress and Monk to fight back wave after wave of enemies by summoning defenses and getting stuck in to the combat yourself. The game is fantasy inspired to begin with but now there are two PC only DLC packs available for free which makes the game more Halloween themed. It also adds Halloween inspired costumes, weapons and a new level.

My Dungeon Defenders guides:

Dungeon Defenders is a very fun game whether by yourself or with others and even more so this Halloween.

Dead Rising 2/ Dead Rising 2: Case Zero/ Dead Rising 2: Off the Record (PC/Xbox 360/PS3)

These guys are coming on to me again...

Capcom’s Dead Rising 2 like its predecessor isn’t actually a scary game but for fans of zombie films these games are the closest your going to get to seeing loads of zombies in one place and having the feeling of being surrounded by the undead. Las Vegas is having a zombie problem and its up to one man to cure the populace one bullet at a time. The fact you can use a wide range of bizarre and unique weapons to kill the undead make it a fun and enjoyable experience. For people on a tight budget I would recommend playing Case Zero which has the core mechanics which makes the main game fun. If you want to try new things in it I even made up my own achivement list, which you can see here. If you can get a friend to play with you online then that will add even more carnage to the experience.

This year Capcom have made a new Dead Rising game called Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. Off the Record is a sort of standalone expansion pack for Dead Rising 2, it is a re-imagining of the Fortune City outbreak where you play as  Frank West instead of Chuck Greene. The game adds a few new performance improvements, modes and a whole new area, a theme park called “Uranus Zone”. If you had to choose only one Dead Rising to buy then Dead Rising 2: Off the Record is the one to get. This is because of the things it adds and because it costs the same amount as the orignal in most stores.

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record is an enjoyable game to play at Halloween especially after watching a few zombie films to get you in the mood.

Other games to consider:

  • Forbidden Siren series.
  • Resident Evil series.
  • Condemned series.
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum/ City.
  • Alan Wake.
  • Fallout series.
  • Dead Space series.
  • Bioshock series.
  • Left 4 Dead series.
  • Luigi Mansion.
  • Silent Hill series.
  • Killing Floor.
  • Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R series.
  • Loads of other games…

I hope you enjoy your Halloween whatever you end up doing.
