Game of the Month (GOTM) is my monthly post where I highlight my favourite video game of the month. These posts will determine my Game of the Year (GOTY) at the end of the year. The same rules apply to GOTM as it does when writing my GOTY.
GOTM 2023: June – Amnesia: The Bunker (Xbox Series X)
My GOTM for June 2023 is Amnesia: The Bunker. It is a survivor horror game with immersive sim and sandbox elements from Frictional Games. The fourth game in the Amnesia series.
Amnesia: The Bunker is set during the First World War, where you play as a French soldier who wakes up trapped in a bunker. You quickly realise you are being hunted by “the Beast”.
To find a way to escape, you need to find plot-critical items such as wirecutters to get through previously inaccessible areas. Eventually, you find a detonator handle and dynamite to blow your way out of the bunker.
There is a limited quantity of items that can be used in creative ways to help you fight the Beast. For example, you can pour fuel cans or throw petrol bombs and light them to set traps. Except there aren’t enough immersive sim-type elements available to make the semi-open world not feel like a train ride.
The Beast looks terrible and isn’t practically scary. The game is better played in pitch-black darkness to hide the poor graphics. I don’t like how it has a subplot related to the Romans, weird alien rocks and magical healing waters.

This is the only game I played in June after not playing any during May. This is the sole reason it is my Game of the Month.
