Song of the Month (SOTM) is where I highlight my favourite song of the month. These posts will determine my Song of the Year (SOTY) at the end of the year. The same rules apply to SOTM as it does when writing my GOTY.
I use Spotify to determine which songs are my favourites. This means they are based on how often I have played it and may not be 100% accurate.
My SOTM for April 2023 is Wet Leg with Chaise Longue, a rock and post-punk track. The song was released in 2021 as a single.
Wet Leg is an indie rock group, active since 2019.
I originally heard this song randomly on Spotify, and it is catchy. It is a kind of comedic deadpan song with minimalist drums and instruments. A more dominating guitar joins in later on in the track.
The lyrics reference the teen film Mean Girls from 2004: “Is your muffin buttered?” and “Would you like us to assign someone to butter your muffin?”
The first few times I heard the song, I thought it was great, but now I am pretty sick of it, so I am surprised it is one of my top-played songs of the month.
The song tells the tale of someone going to college to get a degree. Which they call “the big D”, most likely a double entendre. The title chaise longue is mentioned throughout.
I wouldn’t say I am a big fan of the band or song. I prefer “Wet Dream”, another song on their debut album “Wet Leg.”
See you next time for my new 2023 Song of the Month.
