Song of the Month (SOTM) is where I highlight my favourite song of the month. These posts will determine my Song of the Year (SOTY) at the end of the year. The same rules apply to SOTM as it does when writing my GOTY.
I use Spotify to determine which songs are my favourites. This means they are based on how often I have played it and may not be 100% accurate.
My SOTM for February 2023 is Florrie with I Took a Little Something, an electronic, pop, house, and synth-pop track. The song was released in 2011 on her album Experiments.
Florrie (Florence Ellen Arnold) is a pop singer, songwriter, drummer and model active since 2008.
The song is cleverly produced, and its structure repeats several times in the song’s chorus, building on it as it goes. The hook and verses blend together to create a track which doesn’t seem chopped up.
The song tells the story of the singer dreaming and remembering another person.
The repeating ballads of Florrie and the synth beat, drums, and pads give it a 70s or 80s vibe. You will have an upbeat feeling as you listen to it.
When she says “Pictures stuck in a book”, sometimes it sounds like “Bitches stuck in a book”. Which is an odd thing.
I especially like the album cover of Experiments as it shows Florrie in disco-style clothing, and the flares exenterate her legs while also giving it an otherworldy quality.
See you next time for my new 2023 Song of the Month.
