SOTM 2023: January – The Knife: Heartbeats

Remember children to stay away from communist knives… Now The Knife with Heartbeats.

Song of the Month (SOTM) is my new monthly post where I highlight my favourite music of the month. These posts will determine my Song of the Year (SOTY) at the end of the year. The same rules apply to SOTM as it does when writing my GOTY.

I use Spotify to determine which songs are my favourites. This means they are based on how often I have played it and may not be 100% accurate.

My SOTM for January 2023 is The Knife with Heartbeats, an electronic, synth-pop track. The song was released in 2003 on their album Deep Cuts.

It is a coincidence that I still play this song, nearly on its twentieth anniversary.

The Knife was a Swedish electronic music duo formed in 1999. The group consisted of siblings Karin and Olof Dreijer.

Maybe, it is the cold weather that made me listen to this a lot in January.

Heartbeats are one of those type of songs that takes you back to a place and time. It really reminds me of the early 2000s with bands like The Killers.

The song tells the story of two people in love and making love. It also has religious undertones but in a fun way.

The catchy Swedish ballad of the singer Karin Dreijer and their synth beat really drive the track forward. The steel pans sprinkled in are a tropical and summer treat.

See you next time for my new 2023 Song of the Month.
