All the Information and More from the Pokémon Sword and Shield Direct

The age old debate of who would win in a fight: a Sword or a Shield?

A little earlier Nintendo and the Pokémon Company posted a fifteen minute broadcast about their upcoming Pokémon games. The video revealed several new Pokémon, some new mechanics like “Dynamaxing” which are sort of like Mega Evolutions but the Pokémon involved don’t evolve and instead become huge, and a lot more.

Probably the biggest unveiling was the Galar region area called the Wild Area, where Trainers can explore, battle wild Pokémon and connect up with other trainers to fight raid bosses. Weather and location will impact on the type of Pokémon available to capture and some Pokémon will only be found in these raids which are called Max Raid Battles (everyone gets a chance to capture the Pokémon if the raid is won). You will be able to fight Dynamax Pokémon together with other trainers over both a local area network and online but if you can’t get a team of three together the game will provide Support Trainers to help out instead.

A special item known as a Dynamax Band is required for trainers to Dynamax their Pokémon once per battle and the effect lasts only three turns. However, all the moves of a Dynamax Pokémon will turn into special Max Moves that can even trigger some powerful additional effects.

Like other Pokémon games there will be a Pokédex but in Sword and Shield the Pokédex will be part of the Rotom Phone. The Rotom Phone is also home to Rotom, a Pokémon that can enter into various electronic appliances to adjust or improve it. For example, you can attach it to your bike to make it move faster on land, or use it to travel over water.

Five new Pokémon were revealed: Gossifleur, a Grass type, known as the Flowering Pokémon; Eldegoss, a Grass type, known as the Cotton Bloom Pokémon; Wooloo, a Normal type, known as the Sheep Pokémon; Drednaw, a Water/Rock type, known as the Bite Pokémon; and Corviknight, a Flying/Steel type, known as the Raven Pokémon and many serve Galar Taxi, helping transport people from town to town.

Three new starter Pokémon were revealed: Grookey, a Grass type, known as the Chimp Pokémon; Scorbunny, a Fire type, known as the Rabbit Pokémon; and Sobble, a Water type, known as the Water Lizard Pokémon.

Both of the Legendary Pokémon are wolves – Sword players get the sword-wielding Zacian and Shield players gets the shield-bearing Zamazenta.

In Pokémon Shord and Shield you can either be a boy or girl, and this is chosen when you start the game. You will meet Professor Magnolia and her main focus of research has been based on the Dynamax phenomenon. She has a granddaughter calles Sonia who will help you on your adventure. You will also meet Leon and Hop, who are brothers. Whereas Leon is the current undefeated champion of Galar – Hop is like you a new trainer and will be one of your riveals. He hopes to becaome champion like he’s brother one day. If you want to become the best, you will have to deafeat all the gym leaders and win the Pokémon League yourself.
