24th 22nd February, Tribes: Ascend will leave closed beta and enter open beta however the game won’t launch officially until later this year. The game has started out well and developer Hi-Rez has made many improvements during the closed beta, which CEO Todd Harris says “exceeded expectations” with over 300,000 players.
The open beta is now available. I thought it was on Friday but it turns out its today. Servers are currently offline but you can download the latest patch or download the whole game if you are new to Tribes: Ascend while you wait.
You can see the patch notes here:
A major update will add a new mode called Arena Deathmatch which will include two maps designed for it. A new CTF map, Temple Ruins and a new Team Deathmatch map, Inferno. Two new Soldier class unlocks will be available. Also several interface changes, balance tweaks, and bug fixes will included in the update. Existing players will retain all progress and unlocks.
Tribes: Ascend currently features five maps, nine customisable classes, and three modes: Rabbit, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag.
Purchasing gold gives you immediate access to additional classes and weapons but these can also be acquired with experience earned in-game, and upgrades can only be earned with XP.
I been playing Tribes: Ascend lately and its a lot of fun. It reminds me a bit of Team Fortress 2 and games like Quake and Unreal Tournament. Its well worth checking out for a fresh take on combat. Getting XP and leveling up can be slow because of it being a free to play game.
