My Opinion on Fallout: New Vegas Drugs, Prostitutes, Sex Robots and Rock ‘n’ Roll

While looking at Fallout: New Vegas rating and description at its Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) listing you might be surprised by some of the features it says the new game will have. This is my opinion on the following features and how this could be implemented and whether in general these are a good idea.

  • Male and Female Prostitutes
  • During the course of the game, players will encounter male and female prostitutes: the screen fades to black as suggestive dialogue is heard in the background (e.g., “Nice Charlies, too! Give them a shake for the Ben-man, will ya?”)

Having this in a game isn’t anything new with the Grand Theft Auto series being the masters. In Fallout this will be similar to the scenes in GTA IV when you invite your girl friend over for some ‘tea’. People hoping for a full on simulator like the one which was found hidden in the deep depths of GTA: San Andreas will be disappointed :p. I’m guessing you can’t beat them up for your nuka-cola caps back then. When using a black screen for a sex scene, good voice acting is of course important.

It might serve a useful purpose in the game like giving health back to the player or maybe you need to help colonise the radiated areas as some kind of government law. Going to be lots of mutant babies though.

    Prostitute Rating: Pointless

  • Sex Robots
  • …there is also an extended sequence suggesting (no depiction) sexual activity with a robot (e.g., “Fisto reporting for duty . . . Please assume the position,” “I suppose I should test you out . . . Servos active!” and “Something wrong with someone if they got to f**k a machine.”).

This might be similar to doing it with prostitutes but instead you can try it on a robot as long as you know the right buttons to press… (bad joke). This bit made me laugh where a robot says “Something wrong with someone if they got to f**k a machine.” Self explanatory to be honest. I feel a bit sorry for the robots because the way they have been programmed they might have no choice in the matter or maybe in a more creepy way they are intelligent self-aware beings and our renting them selves out for money or for fun which opens a whole different can of worms. Maybe I’m looking too much into it but I like robots but not in that way.

Sex Robot Rating: Pointless but funny.

  • Drugs
  • The storyline sometimes references a fictional drug called “chems,” as well as “Day Trippers,” “cracked out junkies,” and “degenerate, drug-addicted killers.” Players’ Character can be seen consuming the drugs, which sometimes leads to a screen-blurring effect.

This will probably like when you are drunk in GTA IV. I think in Vice City Stories one of the mission you have to drive a truck while stoned which was like being drunk in the other game. It probably be a similar idea. Drugs may have a positive affect like give more damage, reduce pain, boost health and negative effects like making you become addicted. This is similar to what is in Fallout 3 when using certain drugs.

Drug Rating: Good idea. It fits the game environment and atmosphere and is already featured in Fallout 3.

    Conclusion

Having mature content in games is fine if it fits in with the story or setting. Adding mature themes pointlessly to a game to seem more adult isn’t normally a good idea. This means it should be blended with the other aspects of the game and not stick out. Hopefully the developers of Fallout: New Vegas will do this.

This is a good comparison. The Witcher got criticised for letting people collect cards of nude women and this wasnt even necessary to the game. I didn’t mind it because you didn’t have to do it and it wasnt even I don’t think mentioned in the game itself. You had to find it out. The Witcher 2 from what I seen so far might be trying to hard to be mature and being blatantly aimed at teenagers. I will wait untill I play it to pass judgement of course. Not like the broad media.

I hope you enjoyed my thoughts on this matter and like always I’m not saying I am correct it’s just my opinion. Let me know what you think on this topic.
